Rainbow enjoyed another great weekend of dance, fun and friendship on the East Coast.  Along with five guest teams – Herring Gals, Leap to Your Feet, Makara Morris, Mucky Mountains Morris and Ragged Robin, we were once again hosted magnificently by Yorkshire Coast Morris.

The weekend began on Friday evening when some of us met up at Scalby Mills Pub to socialise and dance informally with other teams.

On Saturday, we danced at spots including Peasholm Park, the miniature railway and the Sands Development/beach huts.  This year we were treated to a display by the Red Arrows who were performing as part of the Armed Forces Day celebrations – very exciting!  In the evening, we got together in a local church hall, were Yorkshire Coast Morris once again provided an excellent evening meal, which was followed by dancing.

Sunday morning saw us all performing at Scarborough Castle – a wonderful location.  After lunch, all teams performed a Showcase dance at the Harbourside, following which Leap to Your Feet were presented with the Gordon Crowther Memorial Staff.

Following a short procession to the beach, we all danced the Dorset Four Hand Reel before the traditional singing of Auld Lang Syne – it’s always quite a sight when dancers form a large circle with musicians standing in the middle.

As always, the weekend concluded with the traditional run into the sea.  Once again, Rainbow, in bloomers, blouses and hats, formed a line and charged down the sands into the sea, which this year was unexpectedly warm (it’s usually freezing)!

The weather was perfect for a weekend of dancing – sunny but not too warm.  Thanks so much to Yorkshire Coast Morris for working so hard to ensure the weekend was a success and for their warmth and friendship.

Friends of Valley Gardens 1940s day

Sunday, 18th June – Friends of Valley Gardens 1940s day

We were invited to dance again at this fabulous event in Harrogate.  The day was hot and sunny, so the gardens were crowded with exhibitors and visitors.  Stylish vintage clothes were on display and for sale, including the cutest mini-morris-hat fascinator.

Temperatures soared, we danced and smiled, and then dashed for shade and ice cream.

Friday, 9 June – Bradford School of Art Degree Summer Show Launch

Roz Doherty invited us to view her exhibition –  a photographic display of Rainbow Morris Dancers members.  Several of us attended and were delighted with it.  Roz had previously taken individual photos of us in our home surroundings.  The visit was rounded off with a trip to the Gin Bar in Sunbridge Wells.  Altogether a very enjoyable evening!

The Airedale Heifer, Riddlesden 3 June 2017

Another wonderful sunny day for this occasion organised by Flagcrackers. Also dancing besides them and Rainbow Morris were Crook Morris, Clogarythm, Fiddle ‘n’ Feet, Buttercross Belles and Persephone.

Three of our dancers also dance with Fiddle and Feet and that day were dancing with them.

For an hour and a half some danced in front of the pub and some behind. The landlady Heather then put on sandwiches and chips for all dancers – no mean feat and very welcome. Another hour of dancing in the same spots took place before we all retired to the back of the pub for show dances.

A great way to spend a summer Saturday!
