Furness Folk Festival, Ulverston 8 – 10 July 2016
Rowena’s Blog Furness Folk Festival, Ulverston 8 – 10 July 2016
Rainbow Morris enjoyed a weekend of dancing in the Southern Lakes at the ‘Furness Tradition’ Folk Festival furnesstradition.org.uk – despite the weather!
The initial parade was dampened by the rain, but all the teams present made their way under umbrellas and plastic ponchos to the Market Cross. The rain let up for a bit here, so we managed some dancing – with some trepidation on the wet cobbles which have a history of accidents for Rainbow.
Successfully navigating this dance spot we continued the day with a walk out to a sheltered housing area where we were well received.
Unfortunately after that the rain came down in earnest so we spent the afternoon dancing inside to an audience of bedraggled visitors sheltering from the rain.
The evening concert was excellent with some brilliant fiddle, accordion and singing.
Sunday morning saw us dancing with all the other teams outside the market on a road cordoned off for a vintage bike and car rally – there were a few anxious looks from the proud owners as the Morris sticks were waved around, but we seemed to get away without any incidents!
Overall a fun weekend with the usual welcoming hospitality of the Furness Tradition festival.
Monday, 1 August – Yorkshire Day Celebrations at Hartshead Social Club
Hartshead Social Club certainly know how to celebrate Yorkshire Day! The club was packed inside and outside. Rainbow Morris enjoyed dancing here along with Thieving Magpies.
Both teams were delighted that both children and adults watching were keen to join in. We danced until dusk and went home tired but full after feasting on chicken and chips provided by the club.
A very enjoyable Yorkshire Day!
Saturday, 23 July – Clapham Street Fair
Rainbow Morris danced in glorious sunshine at the Clapham Street Fair on 23 July 2016, a regular Dales event. There were lots of stalls, a fantastic community Jazz Band and a duck race, where 700 ducks sauntered down the beck (it hadn’t rained for 2 weeks) to be caught by young volunteers. Afterwards we listened to Mike Harding and friends playing outside the Bunk Bar. Thanks to the Cave Rescue Organisation for the tea and cakes.

We are delighted to be invited once again to take part in the Torchlight Procession. We will be dancing around the village from approximately 1pm onwards, later joining (or leading, as in other years!) the procession down the Main Street, to sing carols around the Christmas tree at the bottom. Always a very enjoyable event, involving mulled wine and mince pies at some stage!
